While arguments for the necessity and benefits of deploying renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions are established, financing remains one of the largest hurdles to their adoption. Though governments have intervened to provide large amounts of development and project financing, the balance of funds necessary to deploy these solutions will ultimately have to come from private sector sources. Given the early stage of some of the technologies, companies, and products, investors have become involved on the company side through the deployment of traditional venture and growth equity capital. Project financiers have also become involved, adding their own pools of capital to large capital infusions by governments and financing available to traditional project developers and large energy equipment providers. As pure renewable energy and energy efficiency opportunities have necessarily been too early stage for most public and private equity investors, they have sought exposure through existing investments and/or begun to develop their strategies in anticipation of future opportunities.
